Career Resource Highlight: Use FOCUS to Identify Career Options by Christy R

Career Resource Highlight: FOCUS

Identify Your Career Options

Career Planning can be an overwhelming process if you try to tackle it all at once and it’s easy to feel pressure when you think you have to choose one occupation in which to spend the rest of your life. However, it’s important to consider all of your options and remember that many of your abilities can be applied to a wide variety of fields. Just because you start your career in one field, you are by no means limited to that area for the rest of your life.

So what is the best way to start compiling a list of all your choices? Major and Career Exploration is easily broken down into four steps. The first is Self Assessment. For this step, OU Career Services has made available to all OU students a helpful resource called FOCUS. FOCUS is an online major and career planning tool that enables users to complete a series of assessments in order to help steer them toward various career options.

The simple, survey-like format guides you easily through these assessments. You will be prompted to fill out the following assessments:

  • Work Interest Assessment
  • Personality Assessment
  • Skills Assessment
  • Values Assessment
  • Leisure Interest Assessment

Once you have filled out this information, FOCUS will compile all the information to give you a list of top career choices to consider. You can choose to save the majors/occupations that interest you, and highlight the most interesting choices. FOCUS then saves your customized list in a Career Portfolio, which you can return to view and update as you continue your career/major search.

To create your own FOCUS account, click here, or view our How To video.

You can also schedule an individual appointment to discus your major and career options by calling or visiting Career Services.
